Shooting Philosophy

In West Cork’s challenging light, this mode prioritizes optical sharpness over low ISO. The 75-300mm lens is notoriously soft at its widest aperture (f/6.7) when fully extended to 300mm. Stopping down to f/8 forces the lens to resolve more detail, which is critical for bird feathers. While $1/500$ is sufficient for perched subjects, be prepared to scroll the front dial to $1/1600$ if the bird prepares for flight.
